⚠️ Quick Check: Are You Being Scammed?

If you can say “YES” to any of these, stop all communication immediately.

  • Communication: Did they contact you via WhatsApp, SMS, or Telegram? Licensed lenders are legally prohibited from advertising through these channels.
  • Upfront Fees: Have they asked for GST, admin fees, or “security deposits” before giving you the money? Legitimate lenders only deduct a maximum 10% approval or administrative fee from the loan principal after approval, not via a separate upfront transfer.
  • Verification: Are they trying to approve your loan entirely online without an in-person meeting at their registered office? Licensed lenders are required to complete proper identity checks before finalising a loan.
  • Sensitive Data: Did they ask for your Singpass login or OTP? Never share these, it is a major red flag.

Loan scams keep evolving in 2026. Scammers now use spoofed caller IDs, fake websites, impersonation of licensed moneylenders, and AI generated documents to look legitimate.

If you are searching for loan scam red flags, you probably want protection before you transfer a single dollar. This guide gives you a clear, actionable checklist to help you spot warning signs early.

⚠️ Important Notice: Protecting Our Customers from Impersonation

At Horison Credit, we have received reports of scammers impersonating our staff and using our brand assets, logos, UEN, and office address, to deceive the public. Please take a moment to read these official safety protocols:

  • Official Channels Only: Horison Credit never solicits loans through WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook. Any unsolicited message claiming to be from us is a scam.
  • No Upfront Payments: We will never ask you to transfer money for admin fees, GST, or processing before your loan is disbursed. Legal fees are only deducted from the loan principal after approval.
  • Secure Verification: Our staff will never ask for your Singpass password or OTP over the phone. All income verification is done via official, secure government API redirects.
  • In-Person Finalisation: By law, all loan contracts must be signed in person at our registered business premises. We do not offer 100% online loans without a face-to-face meeting.

If you encounter a suspicious website or message using our name, please report it immediately to the ScamShield Helpline at 1799 or the Singapore Police Force at 999.

Why Loan Scams Are Increasing in 2026

Financial discussion in office representing why loan scams are increasing in Singapore

Scammers tend to target people facing urgent financial needs. They exploit fear, urgency, and confusion to push you into making a quick decision.

Legitimate licensed moneylenders are regulated and must follow strict rules. In practical terms, the caps below are your quickest reality check. If what you are being offered goes beyond these limits, treat it as a red flag.

  • Maximum interest rate, 4% per month
  • Maximum late interest rate, 4% per month, typically applied only on overdue amounts
  • Late fee capped at S$60 per month
  • Upfront fee capped at 10% of the principal, deducted from the approved loan amount
  • Total charges cannot exceed the principal loan amount

10 Loan Scam Red Flags You Must Watch Out For

1. They Contact You via SMS, WhatsApp or Telegram

Licensed moneylenders are not allowed to advertise via SMS, cold calls, or messaging apps. Legitimate advertising is limited to business or consumer directories, the lender’s official website, and adverts within or on their physical premises. If you receive a random loan offer through WhatsApp or Telegram, treat it as suspicious.

2. They Ask for Upfront Fees Before Disbursement

A legitimate licensed moneylender can only deduct up to 10% of the principal as an upfront fee from the approved loan amount. If someone asks you to transfer money before releasing your loan, such as processing fees, insurance fees, admin fees, or GST payments, it is very likely a scam.

3. They Offer Guaranteed Approval

No legitimate lender guarantees approval without proper assessment. Claims such as 100% approval guaranteed, no credit check needed, or instant approval regardless of income should raise concern. Licensed lenders must perform due diligence.

    4. They Do Not Appear in the MinLaw Registry

All licensed moneylenders must be listed on the official Registry. If the company name, licence number, address, or contact details do not match the official list, do not proceed.

    5. They Ask for Your Singpass ID or Password

No legitimate lender will ever request your Singpass ID or password, internet banking credentials, or ATM PIN. If anyone asks, treat it as a scam attempt.

    6. They Retain Your NRIC or Personal Documents

Licensed moneylenders are not allowed to keep your NRIC, passport, work permit, ATM card, or other personal identification documents. If someone insists on holding your documents, walk away.

    7. They Ask You to Sign a Blank or Incomplete Contract

A lender should explain terms in a language you understand, provide a complete contract, and give you a copy of the Note of Contract. Signing a blank or incomplete contract is a serious warning sign.

    8. Interest Rates Exceed 4% Per Month

Licensed moneylenders cannot charge more than 4% interest per month. Late interest is capped at 4% per month and should only be applied to the overdue amount. If someone quotes higher rates, it is unlawful.

    9. They Withhold Part of Your Principal Without Explanation

Other than the permitted 10% upfront fee, lenders cannot arbitrarily deduct additional amounts from your principal. If you apply for S$5,000 and receive significantly less without a clear breakdown, that is a red flag.

    10. They Use Threats or Harassment

Licensed moneylenders must not use abusive language, harass you, or threaten you. Any intimidation may indicate an unlicensed moneylender or a serious breach.

3 Step Verification Process Before You Accept Any Loan

If you suspect a loan scam, follow this checklist before you commit.

Step 1: Check the Official Registry

Verify the company name, licence number, address, and contact details against the official Registry. Do not rely on links sent via SMS or messaging apps. Search independently.

Step 2: Confirm the Advertising Channel

If you received the offer through SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, or a cold call, treat it as suspicious. Legitimate lenders should not promote loans through prohibited channels.

Step 3: Review the Loan Terms Against Legal Caps

    • Interest, 4% per month or less
    • Late interest, 4% per month or less, applied only to overdue amounts
    • Late fee, S$60 per month or less
    • Upfront fee, 10% of principal or less
    • Total charges cannot exceed the principal amount

If any of these limits are exceeded, decline immediately.

Final Thoughts: Stay Alert in 2026

Loan scams are getting more sophisticated, but the protection framework remains clear. Whenever in doubt, verify independently, never rush, never transfer upfront fees, and never share Singpass or banking credentials.

Considering a legitimate loan, take time to understand the contract before signing, and ensure you are dealing with a licensed moneylender listed on the official Registry.
